Cleveland Indians Rumors

12-18-2006

This isn't really an Indians rumor yet but Buster Olney's blog is saying Alexis Rios OF is available with Toronto's signing of Vernon Wells. The Blue Jays have a good young prospect that is ready for the OF in Adam Lind. They are hoping Rios could bring back a middle to back end of rotation starter. (Olney's rumor mentioned a #4) I really don't know what the Indians would do with him since they have too many OF now. But he fits the model they seem to like:

cheap: four years away from free agency

a scout's dream: all physical tools (6'5"/195) and won't take a walk to save his life

He'd be better than Blake and Dellucci/Michaels though. Still, he's not worth Lee or Westbrook. Maybe Byrd and an extra young OF?

This rumor doesn't involve the Indians, but it should if Hayden Penn is available. The Orioles appear to be looking for a young 1st baseman (Indians don't want Garko anyway) and outfield help, of which the Indians have quite a few.

"Orioles vice president Jim Duquette said he exchanged text messages with Brian Roberts yesterday and assured him that he is "not going anywhere." On Monday, the first day of the winter meetings, the Orioles and the Braves were in the advanced stages of a deal that would have sent Roberts and pitching prospect Hayden Penn to Atlanta for second baseman Marcus Giles and first baseman Adam LaRoche."

More Manny

"The Red Sox's signing of J.D. Drew to a five-year, $70 million deal could allow general manager Theo Epstein to lower the asking price for Manny Ramirez, possibly sending him to the Angels. Ramirez is reportedly interested in returning to Cleveland, but the Indians aren't believed to have gotten involved."

Lastings Milledge?

"Those items still draw daily interest from clubs wondering if Milledge is available, and if so, for what players. One executive identified the Cleveland Indians as a club interested in Milledge; another pointed to the Oakland Athletics as a possible destination."

More Manny related rumors. It seems the asking price is changing from the often reported three top prospects (for the Indians, it was Adam Miller, Fausto Carmona, & Trevor Crowe) to major league players now. Typical of the big spending teams. They only want prospects as a last resort, and then only as trade currency to help their teams win now.

"Boston is asking a ton for outfielder Ramirez, who can veto any trade, and the Red Sox aren’t having much luck. They asked Texas for a package that included shortstop Michael Young – then told the Dodgers they wanted three major league players in return."

Chicago is looking for starting pitching and Jake Westbrook's name has been mentioned in many rumors involving them over the last month. Can't see Jacque Jones being of interest to the Indians.

"The Cubs also may use Jones to lure starting pitcher Jake Westbrook from Cleveland, but the Indians have shown little inclination to move Westbrook, who looks to be a better fit in Wrigley Field than Lilly."

The 2006 MLB GM Winter Meetings have started Here is a running recap of current rumors involving the Cleveland Indians.

In their other rumors section, the Whittier Daily News had this to say:

"Scot Shields to the Cleveland Indians for minor-league outfielder Trevor Crowe, a sweet swinger that Baseball America tabs as the Indians' best hitter for average and the prospect with the best strike-zone discipline."

The Providence Journal (Rhode Island) has more rumors involving the Indians and Manny Ramirez here.

"At least five teams have expressed varying levels of interest: San Francisco, Seattle, San Diego, Cleveland and Los Angeles. Of those, the Dodgers have by far the most to offer.

The Indians are a long shot, but their stash of young players is as good as any organization in the American League. And there's this: there's little doubt that Ramirez would agree to the organization with which he began his career."

From RotoWorld:

"The Indians are reportedly having serious conversations with free agent Octavio Dotel.
Cleveland really needed quality over quantity when it came to the pen, but they've already brought in two veterans and seem likely to acquire a third. Dotel would be a candidate to close if signed. However, there are going to be a lot of teams in on him, including some from large markets."
