Indians Rumors

Dan Haren
There are reports now of the
Indians making an offer for Dan Haren RH SP of the Oakland A's.
Per Fox Sports, Cleveland is willing to start with a package of
Adam Miller and Aaron Laffey for Haren. Another report mentions
2B Asdrubal Cabrera as a target of the A's but the Indians are
reluctant to include him. The main competition for Haren at the
present time appears to be the Arizona Diamondbacks who have
offered a package headed by young OF Carlos Gonzalez.
It is unclear how serious Beane
is in trading Haren. The A's 2008 season would be questionable
without he and the inconsistent (playing time wise) Rich Harden,
who always seems to end up on the DL for chunks of the season.
With two prospect loaded organizations in the Indians and
Diamondbacks competing for him, Beane may just get an offer he
can't refuse.
The upside to a possible deal is
that Haren could put the Indians back even, at least on paper,
with the loaded offense of the Detroit Tigers in 2008. They
would have three front of the rotation types, which normally is
a ticket to a playoff berth. This is also the type of prospect
for veteran trade I like where the club is only willing to deal
high end farmhands for veteran difference makers. Haren is also
still young, just turning 27 in September.
The downside is that Haren has
reached his peak and is more a 2-3 type than an ace and the
Indians are giving up a future sure one here in Adam Miller,
health permitting. Miller is every bit as good a prospect as CC
Sabathia was. You are not going to get a proven young starter
like Haren though without someone like Miller leading the
package. The addition of another pitcher - Aaron Laffey or
Jeremy Sowers here is not a problem. That should be the limit
though in top pitching prospects. The Indians could add another
one or two position prospects but I would not include someone
the caliber of Asdrubal Cabrera. Hopefully, Mark Shapiro
realizes now he has bad karma with the 2B moves and leaves that
alone.
